No nutcracker

Thanks so much for all your well wishes for my poor old husband trapped on a train for over 12 hours, he made it safely back home at 1.30 pm this afternoon.

But away from the chaos, I have had a lovely day. We got the coveted window seat in our favourite cafe as not many people had made the journey into town, had lovely warming meals and frothy cappuccinos, later we drank hot chocolate and shared a brownie before heading back out. With all the snow falling we embraced the season and did some christmas shopping then struggled home with our bags full of gift wrap and my best purchase of the day, a huge net of shiny mixed nuts in their shells. Slight problem. No nutcracker in the house.

Now the snow is really coming down but it looks perfect for a evening winter walk, I love the silence that the snow provides, so we are going to get out there to take advantage of our very own Narnia. While the snow is untouched. Stay safe x

Snow days

So I was going to move over to my new blog today, but with a husband missing for 14 hours trapped on a train in the snow in some far away town, we will all have to wait a few more days for the final tweaks to be completed. At least he is with a whole train full of people, may have even made some new friends? I do love to look at the snow but now I jus want him home. I have been house bound for a couple of days now so I will brave the outside to meet a friend and have a nice hot drink and a piece of cake in a nearby cafe whilst I await my favourite persons return. I hope you are all okay wherever you live x

I was woken early this morning by my door buzzer, loud and continuous like a swarm of angry wasps. I scrambled out of bed and grabbed my oversized cardigan to appear slightly decent as I ran down three flights of stairs to catch the postman before he left me a collection card instead of a package. He's fast that guy, only too keen to walk away rather than wait a couple of minutes.

Well it was worth being up with the lark to receive my perfect surprise parcel. It was my Autumn swap package from Liz at Hey we made it.
Sofia runs this swap every Fall. And I love taking part. I wonder if my partner has received hers yet?

Inside were brown paper writing pads, beautiful soft Alpaca wool, traditional string, yummy spiced tea and the highlight, a bar of Mast brothers chocolate. I have been wanting to get my hands on some since I saw it on design sponge ages ago, to receive such a thoughtful gift really has made my week. Thank you so much Liz.

I love this new fabric range by artist-designer Emily Sutton for St Jude’s, it is another beautiful feather in the cap of their amazing fabric collection.

Inspired by the relics of a bygone era and afternoons immersed in the contents of the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh, Emily recently graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art and combines her love of drawing, painting and crafting in her work. The fabrics will be available from tomorrow.

Chocolate souffles

I have a small addiction to GU chocolate souffles, light as air and rich with the flavour of the darkest chocolate. As a result I end up with lots of the glass serving jars they come in, I reuse them for serving butter and dips, holding toothpicks and olives, but still have stacks in the cupboards.

So to give them yet another purpose I gathered some scraps of lace and favourite twine to wrap around the glasses then trimmed them with some berries, gold beads and silver sparkles. Now they are tea light holders. Glowing and twinkling on the kitchen table.

Once upon a Monday, I saw these beautiful dresses by Alberta Ferretti. I get so inspired by sheer fabric and lace overlaying. Billowing chiffon with beautiful details. Clothes so delicate they look as though they might pale to dust in a strong wind. Just the kind of thing modern fairy tales are made of.

Sod it, the festive season is going to arrive before we know it, even though we have a year to prepare and the shops bamboozle us with holiday things from September onwards, it still seems to come as a surprise on December the 19th when I still haven't got all the food decorations and gifts that I need. I just can't wait any longer to post about these lovely bells, candles and garlands from Toast house and home not so seasonal really in colours of peeling gold, terracotta and brown paper I think they have year round appeal.

I am in the mood for fantasy today as it is so grim outside, and although I am dressed it is still cold so I am back in bed writing, drinking a cup of tea and eating turkish delight. Extravagant I know, but I can't go anywhere so that is that. I will admit, even though I think it to be wildly uncouth I have reheated this tea twice, please lets just keep that between us.

Anyway my third illustrator today is the wonderful Kate Wilson of Little doodles. I do wish my backyard wildlife were as enthusiastic about pretty things as these little feathered folk, when we finally get our own garden and bird table I will teach them some new tricks. They will dine on peanut party rings and birdseed macaroons.

Great ships and flocks of gulls

Winter is closing in on our house today, swirling winds whipping leaves from their branches and throwing them up into the air. The sky is as dark as dusk and it is only just after 10am.

The winter in my imagination however, has been captured perfectly in these top images by local Hastings artist Claire Fletcher. Where is my knowing reindeer to guide me through the snow? (will add to December wishlist)
Many of Claire's illustrations and paintings are inspired by a magically nostalgic view of local attractions, surroundings and traditional British past times. How lucky to see the world in this playful way. Great ships and flocks of seagulls, mermaids and sailboats, favourite pets and toys, dress ups and exploring games.

I see life in a similar way in my head, I just can't draw or paint for toffee.

A decent meal

One of my favourite things about being at home so much is eating three proper meals a day. No more hastily grabbed snacks like greasy sausage rolls or cardboard tasting sandwiches that are laced with too much mayonnaise and cheap margarine. My fridge is also a happier place now that the greenery gets eaten before it wilts, and I get to see my husband for lunch too. An hour of daylight spent slowing down and spending some time eating home cooked meals at the table without our laptops is a simple luxury.

I am leaving for London now, excited to be meeting some other creative girls, we so often speak via email and twitter but rarely find the time to gather in one place, so it will be a treat to put the faces to the names I know so well.

I hope you are all tucked up on this wild November evening. Nothing more satisfying than a hand made (not by me though) chicken and leek pie with a side of locally grown vegetables. I have been rain battered by leaving the house today but it made this dinner taste even sweeter.

I love to spend my weekends discovering the delights of a town I have never visited before, unfortunately I work nearly every Saturday and on sundays a lot of the smaller shops are closed. But I was lucky enough to have the entire of last weekend off. So we woke early and shipped out to Deal in Kent, and it did not disappoint. A lovely main street of organic cafes, vintage shops, an amazing cheese shop with a wonderful owner who with his great knowledge helped us with our choices.

We left Deal with a vintage fur coat and a bag of beautiful fresh baked meringues for her, and cheese, meats and unrefined sea salt for him.

I will no longer be working Saturdays after this week so heres to many more explorations.

A perfect start for curbing winter chills this October was taking part in my sister Tamzin's cookie exchange. I was so excited when I received a box labelled perishables and opened it to find the delicious parcel from Alissa containing layers of chocolate, hazelnut and lemon biscuits. Plenty to share with friends and family and even enough left over to brighten a rubbish day at work. I wonder if they will actually miss me or just the baked goods when I leave?

When we first decorated out apartment I used Farrow and Ball paint in every room. I love the natural colours and delicate chalky finish of their paints. We were quite bold with choices of dark greys to mimic our English skies. A while ago I repainted the two biggest rooms white, Now reading this lovely book-Farrow & Ball Living with Colour by Ros Byam Shaw- I am seriously wondering where I can add some striking colours again. My top six colours for adding a drama are Blazer, India Yellow, and Minster Green, Drawing room blue, Pelt, and Babouche. And if you want to paper a wall or two, these four wallpapers are definite keepers Wisteria, Orangrie, Peony, and St Antoine.

Winter cheer

I am sure you all know how partial I am to a good moodboard. Well today I have news of a great competition with The Conran store and Mydeco. I made mine as an example with winter in mind, and the way this season is going I will need all these warm browns and cheery yellows to keep me going through the winter months. I have chosen roomy suede and rattan bags to use as storage for all those magazines I have piled all over the place, and plenty of candles for a cosy glow. The competition will be widely promoted from the 11th October. But as my readers (UK residents only I am afraid) you can enter from today.

A spot of lunch

Just preparing lunch before I brave the outside world, a world which today is filled with plumes of smoke from the remains of our smouldering Pier after some swines set it alight last night. I need to find an outfit that won't mind soaking up the miserable smoke and ash. Meanwhile as I muster the will to leave, I am cheering myself up with a 1920's film day, a tonne of sequinned headdresses and feathers and flower garlands to lift my dampened spirits.

I thought I would also share a picture of my living room as it looks this morning, the swan it seems has been to busy to tidy. But I've not been idling, I spent the morning listing a final few sets of photographs in my Etsy shop. and the lounge will be ship shape later.

I adore Autumn and all the colours it yields (as you well know, bla bla bla, do I ever shut up about it?) and that is why I love Plumo. This seasons collection makes me want to pull on snuggly socks and winter boots, wrap up in a blanket tied with a jute belt, and go collect natures treasure in a leafy woodland somewhere.

Botanical prints

I have been asked a few times where I got the pretty rose prints in my lounge. They were the pages of an old book of the Botanical Prints of Pierre-Joseph Redouté. After visiting the V&A yesterday I was browsing their online shop and found their beautiful collection of posters and prints. They have lots (not exactly the same), but of other beautiful fruits, flowers and birds.

Oh just one more unrelated thing I loved from the shop and then I promise to let you discover the rest for yourself! These oh so sweet finger pincushions. For keeping your pins safe and close by.

Had a fabulous time in London with friends today. We enjoyed yummy balsamic strawberry and black pepper ice cream next to the shimmering water in the garden at the V&A whilst waiting to see the Grace Kelly exhibition. It was all there, the Kelly bag, diamond tiara, floral silk pumps, capsule honeymoon wardrobe. Lots of cooing later and with a few (can't leave behind) items from the museum shop. I found myself making a mad dash for the train with a paper wrapped caramel doughnut in one hand and a copy of this beautiful magazine in the other. So impressed with their ethos (below) and what I discovered within the pages. I subscribed as soon as I got home. Can't wait for the next issue to arrive.

There's no quicker, easier way to update or re direct the design of any room than with new soft furnishings and cushions in my opinion are the best place to start. I love using found and repurposed fabric from favourite dresses and skirts that no longer fit or vintage curtains, to make quick decorative cushion covers. Who knew the old embellished Jigsaw cardigan that I shrunk would look so great on my sofa?

Last bank holiday we spent a couple of lovely hours in Whitstable. By the time we were ready for food, there wasn't a table for two in any of the great places to eat, so we scoured the local shops to pick up figs, cheeses, bread and a two person bottle of refreshing Kent Cider.
All around the beach front and restaurants there are huge boxes of oyster shells pilled high ready for recycling, although a main attraction of the area I like to look but not eat so alas, no oysters for us.

As you can see I am still yet to expand my blog, but with me still at the bank and my husband working too many hours a day this is a slow process. I have my fingers crossed for the end of Autumn as now the craziness of Summer is winding down and it feels okay to stay indoors.

No longer a term for a corrective lashing. I have decided to start a new feature for thursdays called six of the best, ranging from home wares to wardrobe updates. Now I just have to remember to put the post up every week (feel free to remind me!) For my first post I thought I would scour the shops for six of the best Twiggy style dresses. I have seen these all over the hight street and I love the fact that they are quite demure but have a short hemline to flash a bit of leg. Great with a long sleeve top underneath, brightly coloured tights or if you are like me, a favourite cardigan. I have always thought it fun to dress up like a vintage dolly.

I have been writing from my bed, about my travels to Lyon for Eurostar, this morning. Heavy charcoal clouds in the sky, window open so I can hear the last of the Summer rain falling in the yard below. Hot cup of my favourite coffee fresh from the stove. Home looks like this at the moment, but Autumn makes me want to move things around almost every day.

Overindulgence is always a danger when we cross the La Manche. Delicious cheeses, sausages and hams, cakes and pastries glazed and glistening with caramelised sugar and berries, pastel pink meringues piled high like raspberry clouds. I saw some beautiful dresses with cotton ruffles and light gauzy tunics, at least my credit card forgotten, safe at home was spared a battering.

City windows with flower baskets and window sill gardens, greenery for even the smallest space. Another great discovery was the many carousels dotted around the city, I love all the twinkling lights and ornately painted horses and wild animals. The music and the delight.

Last Tuesday we caught the Eurostar train to Lyon. One train change and on the comfy spacious top deck of a TGV we make our final half of the journey fleeting through the beautiful french countryside, whizzing past vineyards and vegetable crops. After leaving the grey skies of England behind, we stepped out into the hot early evening sunshine.
Our hotel was just a few streets away with a breath taking panoramic view of the whole city. Hotels are for sleeping though, so we dropped off our bags and headed straight out to explore the streets. Tall buildings with shuttered windows, two wide rivers to cross and glimpses of the cathedral up and beyond. Time to seek nourishment in one of the many bustling back street restaurants. Authentic Bouchon or not the food was hearty and tasty, just what we needed for the long walk back.

Thursday. A quick walk to town for white cotton thread to finish some garlands that have been patiently waiting on my work table, turned into the unexpected treat of coffee with a friend. The sun even showed up for the afternoon.

I came home to find an eagerly awaited parcel, then sat down with a cool drink, flicked through the new Toast catalogue and ate my lunch. The cover is beautiful haunting blues and mauves, all the colours of my dried Hydrangeas. Things are looking up.

Thanks for your comments after my Monday post. This week has been the greyest week of the summer, it could be Autumn, it could be November. There is one stream of sunlight breaking through a murderously black sky and landing on my shoulder as I type. Work has been hectic and stressful with added drama and I have been suffering with rage.

So I am gladly using this mid week hiatus for a little me time, to catch up with domestic chores in solitude and nearing the completion of the cushions which have been laying about in my work room half made for months. Tidying away my earrings to a safer place and finding cheer in this painting that I picked up fro £2 in my favourite junk shop. Tomorrow I bake.

Although I love Autumn, it seems to have arrived decidedly early. Murky skies and a cold wind, the need for a scarf to keep the chill from my decolletage. Maybe it is just how this week is going to go and the sun will return again, but I just get a feeling.
These catwalk outfits from the Dior AW 2010 couture collection retain the vibrant colours of high summer with opportunity for adding cosiness with woollen wraps and jackets, and no one loves to layer up with a cardigan fastened shut with a corsage or vintage brooch more than me.

Design democracy

I have been nominated by one of my lovely readers as one of the best UK design blogs to enter the mydeco.com Design Democracy Awards 2010 in conjunction with the London Design Festival.

Hmmm what does design democracy mean to me? I never asked myself that before but I guess, the freedom to design, create and inspire no matter who you offend or how much approval you receive. Design democracy leaves the door open to shock and to please. What angers some elates others.
Acceptance. I appreciate everyone has an opinion but now we are not at school anymore no one should be able to bully us about our choices. I have always had quite a strong sense of self and style and it took a lot of will when I was younger to not run with the pack and be the same as every body else. When at age 10 all my friends had the newest technology and teased me as I clung to my vintage camera that took square photos I knew I was on a different path. The difference was I didn't try to make them feel bad for all being the same.

Anyway back to the point, if you think I deserve it please vote for Lobster and swan.

A black liquorice door.

Every time I walk up towards my house, freshly painted pale grey like the British sky with white icing around the windows, I can't help but wonder how fabulous it could be in pink, a huge hunk of pink birthday cake with iced windows and a black liquorice door. Cream puffs for shrubs and sugar flowers in the garden. I have been awake since five this morning and as I'm sure you can guess, baking since six thirty. My brain is addled from all the lemon frosting and chocolate cake batter.

With the frill off an old dressing gown, some fabric flowers, vintage french ribbon and a roll of pretty making tape from the lovely Lynne of Papermash I decorated the corner of the kitchen to accommodate my makeshift cake stand. Then popped in to town to deliver the cakes to my colleagues as an afternoon cheer up, had some lunch and made it home between the summer showers.
