Wardrobe inspiration

Taking inspiration from Audrey Tautou in her new role as Coco Chanel, I cannot wait to see this film, and I will not be satisfied until I find a proper boat necked blue and white striped top to wear on sundays, surely I will need it to plant window boxes . . . . . to collect freshly baked rolls from the bakery. . . . to drink coffee at outdoor cafe tables . . . . to paint. . . . to read . . . . . .

Any one know where I can get my hands on an authentic one?

All images from Coco before Chanel.

Happy Friday!

I can't wait to see that film! I feel like I heard about it ages ago - is it finally coming out soon? I'm not sure where to get the classic striped boat neck top, but I would love to find out.

Not exactly the same as in the film but you might take a look here:

My first comment here as I am usually a silent reader but I saw the film and loved it as I hope you will.
For the top that you wish you could wear, I think you should look for a shop selling the french brand "Saint James" (or maybe on Ebay). I am sure you will find something very similar. Hope it helps.

They have them at LL Bean but the quality is not as good in person.

I know there is a French brand that has them in children's and adult sizes. I will sent out my mental file clerk to remember where I saw them.

I just blogged about this about two weeks ago! Coco avant Chanel was such a beautiful film, and Audrey Tatou was brilliant as usual. Cheers!

Hello,
a little late maybe...
Try this site for the breton shirt
http://brittanyboutique.com/store/meridienshirt.html
There is even a colour that looks like the one on the photo (I guess it's the white/china blue one).
I love your site, it's so inspiring, the colours and style. Thank you!

Oh dear. If you were going to open my drawers, you'd see the proof of my never ending search for the perfect striped shirt.

The St. James shirts:

http://www.saintjames-usa.com/women-nautical-t-shirts.php

Are the real deal French nautical shirts -- originally designed for dock workers. I have both the heavier winter/long sleeved cut and the thiner cotton blend and I wear them both endlessly. (The red stripe is nice change on the classic navy blue.

For someone who hates shopping but loves attempting to look chic, these are a life saver. Every time I buy these, I buy as many as I can afford -- they are the best examples of high-quality, classic purchases that pay for themselves in the number of times you'll wear them.

I was going to say st.james too- Gwenyth Paltrow wears them (she mentioned it on GOOP) so you know they're the real deal!
I can't wait to see this movie either! But I think I will be back in CH by the times it comes out! Sad!

Oh My..... I am so excited about the film! I love Audrey Tautou she is so beautiful and very French! Yes defently try Petit Bateau for the top, I don't have one but always see them in magazines and they seem like the perfect option! xx

*sigh* I've looked into those iconic striped Breton fishing shirts, myself, many times. I'm simply not convinced I can pull off the look as effortlessly and chicly as someone like Coco Chanel...or Audrey Tatou...or, for that matter, any other French woman ever...can!

Lovely pictures, I can't wait to see the film either!! I just thought, I know you don't live in London (well, from what I've gleaned!) but do you know Labour And Wait on Cheshire St in East London? They do what always look like very authentic Breton tops... might be worth a look if your search continues!!

Why is it that proper boat necked blue and white striped tops ooze Sundays? You couldn't wear 'em any other day of the week. Unless, of course, you lived on a boat.

I am not kidding you, I got a precious blue and white stripped shirt at Garden Ridge. I don't know if you have these unlikely sources in your area of the world, and I know they all have different stock, but mine was $2. Yes, two dollars. And the quality is great, very soft, nicely sewn edges. I also have a great one from Banana Republic a few seasons ago, but I must say I like the shape of my $2 find even better.
